Trekking Flores and Corvo Islands

Trekking Flores and Corvo Islands

Fanais Experience

This route begins in the peaceful village of Ponta Delgada, almost in the middle of nowhere, with only a few curious cows as company. Once we start climbing, you soon realize that this is an unique trail, with an overwhelming view over places like the Albarnaz Lighthouse, Corvo island and Monchique islet. Upon arriving at Fanais we have a VIP pass to admire all the surrounding beauty. A little further ahead we will start the descent to Ponta da Fajã, a path that is full of clear water springs, with water so fresh that it seems that it has just came out of a cooling system. In one of the last curves of the path you will be dazzled by the view of Fajã Grande, with the imposing Rocha do Risco on our left and a dangerous cliff on our right. This is the moment when you ask yourself: Could I have come to Flores island and not pass through here?

4 Lakes Experience

This route begins in one of the most beautiful places of the island, right between the Negra and Comprida lakes. After taking some precious moments to admire this wonderful spot we can start the journey that will lead us to Fajã Grande. We start by following the path that skirts Comprida lake, which has an amazing green shore composed by endemic flora and by some other plants that were brought form afar and quickly adapted to the unique weather of the island. This trail also provides an interesting experience regarding bird watching, and if we get lucky we will be able to see birds that use Flores island as a resting point between journeys. As if everything we had seen was not enough, we still have the view over one of the island’s paradise: Fajã Grande. Separating us from Fajã is a steep path that is full of history, once it was here that much of the development of this small village has happened. Fajã is small in size, but big in name and beauty. Upon reaching Fajã, the trail ends in an imposing waterfall with over 80m where an invigorating bath is allowed.

Eyes On the Horizon Experience

A special company seems to follow along with us since the beginning of this route, always on the horizon. Sometimes we miss it, but suddenly it comes back to join us on our journey. We are obviously referring to Corvo island. But let’s not get distracted by the “neighbour”, once we have in Flores island a lot to admire, like watercourses that “try” to block our passage, and the singularities of a small village that used to be the resting place of workers, who managed to build their houses even with the strong winds. The landscape changes a little further ahead and we will see Rocha dos Bordões, a rock that seems to be cut in slices, more like a Sci-Fi movie. As we follow along we will find a dense forest, a typical landscape of this part of the island. We are now entering the village of Ponta Delgada, a place where the land is the main subsistence of the family.

Ruins Experience

And it all starts in the civil parish of Lajedo, also known as the place where the Slavonia shipwrecked. Right at the beginning we realize that the green and the water will be a constant presence throughout the trail (as in almost all the trails). We will find a little bit of everything around here, like breathtaking landscapes, small animals (rabbits) and endemic species. We continue our path near Rocha dos Bordões, an unusual scenery. This valley seems to convey something transcendental. In a blink we arrive to a new village, Mosteiro, which seems desert, but where nice and hard-working persons live. Here lies one of the few identified pirates of the Azores, but in the land of pirates the best is to go to the discovery of an uninhabited place. Caldeira was probably a small village, although with large houses. We have to take the asphalt road now, but only until we start the steep descent to Fajãzinha, where delicious cheeses are waiting to be tasted, somewhere by Pico Redondo. We finished this journey in the most beautiful place in the Azores and probably in the world, the Poço da Ribeira do Ferreiro, but this couldn ́t happen without first visiting Mrs. Fátima at the Fajazinha mill.
